Live from the Oscars

Good evening dear peeps. I write this from sunny southern California. I’ve been really amazed by all the hype out here in anticipation of the Oscars.

Really the Oscars.

I think the Oscars are a colossal waste of time personally. I’ve not watched an Academy Awards show in.. um… probably the early 2000s. And even then, I was watching in short clips here and there.

But out here, you’d think it was America’s most important news event. The local channels have had coverage on the event all week. Construction guys were interviewed, shots of rolled up red carpet… People really give a shit about this stuff?

Apparently not so much. The news is full of stories about the plummeting ratings for the award show. Eight awards have been dropped from the live show this year to streamline it. Laughably, the film folks are upset at the academy about this. I say laughably because to me, this looks like the captain of Titanic rearranging the deck chairs as the ship goes down. I imagine what these folks are upset about is less opportunities them to be recognized onstage.

And personally, that might be part of the problem.

I don’t know about you, but watching a bunch of elite types, dressed to the nines, awarding each other stuff isn’t that fun. On the left we like to talk about the disparity between rich and poor in this country, and I believe that’s a real thing. But, there is also a massive disparity between between world views between the celeb set and common folk. And the less they look like us, the less interested we are in watching their award show. And the red carpet deal, egos on parade. No thanks.

The other issue with the Oscars, quality of the movies. I don’t know about you but I can’t stand another superhero movie. I know they pay like crazy, and lots of folks like them, but with the exception of special effects, not much to see there, IMHO. I haven’t actually been to a movie in 15 years. Not much to motivate me to want to see a movie, I’m not interested in today’s offerings.

I also hate the cinema experience. Stinky theaters, sound that gives me a headache, and motion sickness when I watch a big screen.

If I feel this way, I can’t even imagine why any young person would want to sit through an awards show.
