Snatching Victory from the Jaws of Defeat

As expected, Liz Cheney will be looking for a new job come January. She was deposed because she refused to lie about an election and felt that her duty to the republic outweighed her loyalty to the party or position.

Liz and I agree on virtually nothing politically, except one thing. One thing that is perhaps the most important of all; that this United States was founded as a Democratic Republic. Enshrined in the American experiment is the idea of free and fair elections. Liz and I both seem to understand that the biggest threat the New Republicans face in the future is free and fair elections.

I can help but feel that the Republican Party died yesterday. Its transformation from a Conservative party to a personality-worshiping fascist party is complete. A few more purges of members who aren’t ideologically clean and the entire organization will have been corrupted.

I have a friend who tried to tell me how bad Liz Cheney was for serving on the January 6th Committee. He likes to try to explain how that committee is nothing but a partisan witch hunt. Words the former guy wanted to use a lot. He laments that no “good” republicans are on the committee. He conveniently forgets that House Minority Leader and January 6 revisionist (revising even his own story about where he was when the mob was in the building) enabler Keven McCarthy refused to offer names for the committee until he realized that was a big mistake politically. Then he threw up people like Jim Jordan. Jim was so compromised by his lies, freely shared on social media btw, that he should have recused himself instead of letting Kevin put his name forward.

Liz will be back. There’s talk that she’ll run for President. I’m not sure how that will work. Will she attempt to win the Republican nomination, or if she’ll go for a divisive independent campaign? I don’t think it really matters; it won’t be about her winning as much as it will be about her keeping someone else from winning.

I suspect we haven’t heard the last from her unless Trump runs and wins in 2024. Then we won’t hear from her at all. When fascists tell you what they plan to do if and when they take power, you should believe them. Their track record on that score is strong.

If Trump wins in 2024, there are a lot of people you probably won’t hear from again. If that happens, back pain will be the least of my worries.
